You've got to admire David Waters - Managing Director of Stagescripts He works tirelessly uncovering new pieces of musical theatre from all over the country - pieces written by talented writers but performed only irregularly. Why do amateur companies appear to be so cautious in their choices of musical. I love all the greats - I love Kiss me Kate and Oklahoma, but I am desperate to see amateur groups trying something different, new and exciting - and I am sure their audiences secretly are too! Yes - there is a place for Kiss Me Kate - but lets back NEW MUSICALS and challenge ourselves with more dangerous choices of repertoire for the New Year 2012. How can a new generation of musical theatre writers emerge if they are not supported and encouraged by their audience - at least given a chance! Try producing something new and shout about it - I am sure local communities would actually breathe a sigh of relief!
